Being a linehaul driver isn’t an easy feat and unless you’ve worked in the industry or alongside it, you probably don’t really know what it’s like. Linehaul drivers sacrifice a lot for their careers, you have to be prepared to commit to the job! Luckily, in most cases, these drivers truly enjoy what they do.

We’re pulling the curtain back on the transport industry to take a deeper look at what it’s like to be an interstate linehaul driver and who better to interview than the one and only Billy Daley. Billy, our interstate linehaul driver is here to give you a look into what life on the road is really like.

Working with Kubic Transport as a Linehaul Driver

First things first, how did Billy come to be part of our linehaul team?
Billy started working with us at Kubic Transport 2 years ago after he found out about Kubic through a family connection to Brad. Knowing the family he came from and the dedication that runs through it, we knew he’d be a great fit for the team and he was ultimately brought on board as a contractor.

“It’s really good working with Kubic, there’s a good balance and we support each other while working together. It’s been really good for me to find Kubic and work with them in linehaul. Brad and the gang work well together, it seems easy. Our job isn’t easy so when you find a good working relationship with a company it’s great.”

In it for the long haul

Being a truck driver is in Billy’s blood! As a 4th generation, owner/ driver his father was a driver for his whole life. He was brought up in the industry and grew up loving trucks and life on the road. Billy’s heart is in transport and he’s been kind enough to share his insight from the road with us!

What does the typical day for a linehaul driver look like?
A typical day for a linehaul driver starts with an early wake-up before the sun rises. Coffee is a must! I unload early and reload at the same location, then I start my journey. Sometimes I’m driving Melbourne to Brisbane, other days it might be Melbourne to Sydney.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learnt while being a linehaul driver?
Be patient, I’m a gung-ho kind of a bloke so I’ve been known to jump straight into things but after working with Kubic I’ve learnt to wait for things to come. Wait for the right time to do something and let growth happen. You’ve gotta have a balance in expenses and growth. Our equipment is worth millions of dollars, we can’t just expand without having a strong base for the business.

What advice would you give those wanting to become interstate drivers?
It can be quite hard, if you don’t love the industry it’s not for you. There’s so much we sacrifice, especially when it comes to family. You and your partner need to be prepared to work together because you need that support behind you, it makes a world of difference.

What are some common problems in the transport industry that you strive to help?
We work really hard to make sure drivers are getting what they’re entitled to. Transport is built on underpaid drivers and we’ve worked hard to get driver wages right. When drivers wages are good you get good people and they know they’re being looked after. We get their balance right with driver life/ family life/ social life too.

Kubic Transport is proud to have so many dedicated and passionate drivers on our side!
They play a big part in our ability to remain different to traditional transport providers and allow us to make a difference in the industry.
